subcontractors on every project,” Alan says. “We know that we’re only as good as our subtrades. They’re our players, we’re the coach. I used to play hockey, so I know you can be the best coach in the world but if you don’t have a good goalie and some good players, it’s not going to work.” That’s not to say that coaching isn’t important, however. To ensure their culture is good on site, Alan admits they can be pretty demanding: “Again, I have a sports background,” he says. “I also grew up on a farm. So I really believe in working hard, being honest, and being professional. That’s the culture I try to instill and our subtrades have to buy into that.” “We recently hired a new framer, and in the interview, he came in with his hat on backwards,” Alan recalls. “I said ‘If you’re going to work for us, you cannot wear your hat on backwards.’ He thought I was joking, but I was dead serious. That’s just how I’ve been brought up. That just gives you an idea of what our culture is.” In return for their subcontractors buying into their culture, Alan says they make sure their subcontractors are paid well and paid in a timely manner. “There are never any issues about getting paid on our end, and there are never issues about quality work on their end.” Moving forward, Alan’s goal is to continue forming loyal and longstanding relationships with subcontractors and suppliers. He also hopes to keep forming friendships with clients. He knows that if they want to do that, the company can’t be stagnant or content to rest on their laurels: “We want to continue improving, we want to keep learning,” Alan says. “We want to continue to use the newest technologies and the best products that we can find.” As for the kind of work he wants to do, Alan says he is very happy in the sector he’s in. He loves building high-end custom homes for satisfied clients and is always looking for premium properties in the South Okanagan to continue building this vision. OCTOBER 2024
