into affordable housing. “So there’s been quite a, quite an increase in new units available for housing in the city, and we’ve been involved in most of them,” he says. According to Dave, the credit for that success and repeat business largely belongs to the team Breakwater has put together. In addition to the three partners, that team includes two site superintendents, three engineers, and three senior technologists – “so we’ve got a good blend of engineering technologists, engineers and site folks to help manage the construction and have a successful project,” Dave says. Breakwater’s team also includes their roster of subcontractors, subconsultants, and material suppliers. According to Dave, most of those partners are longstanding and locally-based – as building long-term relationships with local companies “benefits all of us as a community.” “We try and maintain as much local content as we can on our projects, and for the most part, we’ve been able to do that,” he says. “Sometimes local companies are just busy and they don’t have the resources to take on new work, so we’ve occasionally had to go outside the city, but we try to maintain a core list of suppliers and contractors that we use project to project.” Looking forward, Dave says the company’s goal is to maintain their relationships with those preferred suppliers – although, at the same time, they are always open to building new relationships, especially with local companies, as Breakwater is continuously growing and “we don’t NOVEMBER 2024
