NORTHERN CONSTRUCTION The Inuvik Apartment complex is a 27,000-square-foot preengineered steel building. It is being completed under two separate contracts in conjunction with IDC Construction. Due to the Arctic climate, this structure was built on steel piles to withstand the permafrost. The finished apartment complex will feature seventeen standard rental units, each with two to three bedrooms and a fully equipped kitchen. Inuvik Apartments – Inuvik, NWT The Mangilaluk School is a large-scale renovation project happening in Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories which is a small hamlet located on the Arctic Ocean. Along with being a major construction project, this project posed numerous challenges for SWMW. For example, they had to adjust to the arctic conditions, including -40°C weather, permafrost, and heavy winds coming off the ocean – “not to mention the logistical challenges that are inherent in working in such a remote location,” Francis says. This project featured a full renovation along with a gym addition that will be completed in the spring of 2024. It also included a complete exterior retrofit, a refreshed interior layout, and the creation of a community library in the existing school. All this work had to occur while the school was still operating – yet another challenge that SWMW successfully navigated.
