River Tree Developments is a Nova Scotia company dedicated to developing and building healthy and functional homes with low energy costs. Their founding mission, as established by founder and CEO Marlaina Myra, is to create communities and homes using greener building materials with a focus on accessibility and functionality, and in so doing free their clients from rising utility costs while lessening the environmental impact they are making on the earth. They also strive to create communities where people are connected – not just to their natural environment, but also to each other. “Our world needs to think greener, to build a strong community support system and to think of the future,” Marlaina says. “We need living environments that are socially, economically, and environmentally sustainability. At River Tree, our goal is to create those environments.” Marlaina has been passionate about both environmental sustainability and health and wellness for a long time. Building is also in her blood – she personally discovered her passion for design at a young age, thanks to her father’s occupation as a millwright. “Growing up, I had access to various tools and learned many trades from him,” she recalls. “I would often rearrange my room and even build furniture as a child.” As she got older, Marlaina’s interests shifted towards the field of health and wellness. She pursued a career as a massage therapist and eventually obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Dalhousie University – though that experience also got her thinking about building again. “During my time in nursing school, I learned about the MARCH 2024
