career of carpentry, I’ll give you a chance.” Head Honcho Builders also looks for the same passion in their subcontractors and suppliers. Over the years, Terry says they have been fortunate to build some long-lasting relationships with some people and companies who fit that bill: “I have great relationships with all my subtrades,” he says. “I’ve been working with the same electrician since I started my business. I’ve been working with the same plumber since I started my business. I buy all my products and materials from the same company.” Those relationships have lasted so long, Terry explains, because those partners have always delivered quality and honoured their time commitments. If a partner proves they can’t do that, he will stop working with them, even if that means performing their scope inhouse. For example, Head Honcho Builders now does their own foundations, their own flooring, and their own roofing – and their standard of quality has risen considerably as a result. “Sometimes we have to make a change, but the subcontractors we’ve stuck with, we love,” Terry says. “They’re awesome. That’s why we’ve stuck with them.” MARCH 2024
