He credits that client loyalty, once again, to his honesty and transparency, but he also credits his high standard of workmanship: “I make sure I go over and beyond all national building codes of Canada,” he explains. “There’s no such thing as delivering to minimum code for me. For me, it’s either overkill or I don’t do it at all. I don’t want to have to come back and have to fix things because my workers didn’t do it right the first time.” “I take a lot of pride in my quality,” he says. “At the end of a job, I want to be able to stand back and say ‘I did that’ and be proud of it. If I’m not proud of it, then I didn’t do it right.” Terry also expects his team to take the same pride in their work. As mentioned, he says it was difficult initially to find people who felt that way, but recently he’s been fortunate enough to find a few direct team members who share his mentality. In some cases, those employees didn’t have any experience in construction beforehand, but Terry hasn’t minded training them up: “I don’t care if you’ve never swung a hammer,” he says. “What matters is if you have the right attitude. If you have the right attitude, if you’re excited to come to work and learn something new, if you have a passion for building then I can teach you. I’m willing to give anyone a chance – I don’t care about the colour of your skin, I don’t care about your gender, that doesn’t matter to me.
