The Construction Source

“RISE is a simulation-based training using virtual reality, just like the aviation and space industry started using,” Brandon explains. “It can also be completed in a first-person style on a computer or on handheld console like the Steam Deck for individuals uncomfortable with VR. And it’s been made in both English and French and can easily be expanded to other languages.” As the first application for the RISE platform, Hinton Scaffold created a ‘Construction Hazard Awareness’ course, which is a certificate training course that introduces new workers to a virtual industrial site. On that site, they are guided through an overarching orientation experience encountering hazards along their journey. They learn about their rights and other unique elements to keep them safe while working in construction. “That course takes worker on a firsthand journey of the first day onsite at a large industrial construction project,” Brandon says. “They experience everything from orientation and a site walkthrough to the identification of worksite hazards and reinforcement on how to handle them. The scenarios in the program come from the imagination and real-work experience of the experts at Hinton Scaffold Solutions.” In addition to being a tool for teaching safety, that course also gives users the chance to see a construction environment for themselves, and it can encourage people to potentially join the trades. In developing that program in collaboration with their public partners, Hinton Scaffold sought specifically to reach new Canadians, women, youth, marginalized and Indigenous groups, and people that were geographically isolated from city JUNE 2024
