Near future and beyond Looking forward, Denise is excited for the opportunities ahead in her Economic Development position. “I’ve learned that economic development is a slow process,” she says, “but we’ve been working on a number of things that we’re hoping we can push forward in 2024.” For example, the city has been carefully evaluating their tax incentives and land prices with the goal of attracting new businesses and more residential development to the city. As a result, the administration plans to bring forward to Council two new tax incentive policies, and plans for residential lot price reductions. This, in tandem with the recent decrease in the Bank of Canada policy rate, should provide an improved environment for housing starts.
