Matthew’s “triple-crown philosophy” was inadvertently adopted from Vitruvius, who was arguably the greatest architect in history, known for his skill in engineering, art, and craftsmanship. Matthew discovered the similarity after a ferry ride to Vancouver, when he saw his young son had drawn Leonardo da Vinci’s famous ‘Vitruvian Man’ in his notebook. That sketch led Matthew to researching Vitruvius and learning his most famous maxim, which was that “architecture should embody three qualities: utilitias, firmitas, and venustas.” “In English, this means that great handiwork should be useful, sturdy, and with beautiful proportions,” Matthew explains. “I was delighted and not disappointed to find out that my idea was old and not new. It gave me more motivation than ever to offer the product of a triple-crown craftsman: sturdy, useful, and beautiful work at a reasonable price.” In the eight years since, Lopez Contracting has grown and evolved at a steady rate. Originally, the company was as a two-man business working out of Matthew’s garage. That team has since expanded to a diverse roster of various trades working out of a 1,500 square-foot multi-faceted workshop. That workshop has long been one of the company’s key points of difference: “A lot of contracting companies might have a small office or a mailing location, but they don’t actually have a brick and mortar location,” Matthew says. “We do. We call it our one-stop-shop. We have a lot of facilities there which aid the construction and renovation process. We do a lot in-house that other companies generally have to outsource. We also house a lot of our innovations and inventions there.” THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE CANADA
