“We’ve always focused on quality for our position in the market,” Fred says. “We’d rather spend an extra five dollars to make a higher quality product.” In addition to providing a higher quality product and more reliable service, Duracon also strives to differentiate themselves by innovating, and by solving problems that others in the industry are content to live with. For example, a common issue for concrete contractors is the “popouts” that occur in horizontal concrete surfaces after the concrete is placed. Fred remembers being a contractor and being told that that was a problem of alkali-silica reaction (ASR) in the concrete, and that “there’s nothing you can do about it.” Duracon has proved that statement wrong. “Right from the start we knew there was something we could do about it,” says Fred. “We incorporated metakaolin – which is a third powder, with cement powder and fly ash – into the mix. That was a huge game changer in quality of product we were putting out. It was very well received,” he says “When I was a contractor and we got popouts we could explain without lying: it was not a finisher issue,” says Fred. “Now I don’t have to deal with those quality control issues. Our concrete is a very nice product to work with. Contractors notice right away if it’s in the mix. It’s better to place and finish, and is performing very well.” THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE CANADA
