Duracon is an independent concrete supplier that emphasizes up-to-date research and ongoing development, dedicated to getting its customers the right mix at the right time. This locally owned and operated business was first initiated in 2012 by brothers Fred and Walter Funk. Two years later, in the summer of 2014, Duracon Concrete Corporation batched its first load. Today, Duracon is an independent concrete supplier that emphasizes up-to-date research and ongoing development. Fred has personally been a concrete contractor most of his life. About the time Duracon started, there was only one ready-mix company in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. According to Fred, that company was having supply issues, and he and Walter believed they could provide a more reliable alternative. “This business is a concrete business and the quality of concrete is important, but it is very much an equipment business as well,” Fred explains. “While you need expertise in making concrete, if you can’t deliver the concrete because your trucks are falling apart, the whole business model fails.” To help with the trucking and logistics side of the business, Fred and Walter brought on general manager John Quartel, who came from a trucking background in the Alberta oil industry. “Concrete’s an unforgiving business for breakdowns,” John says. “We differentiate ourselves in the marketplace by providing good service – getting concrete when it’s needed. We do that we have to do to be properly organized and have reliable equipment.” At the same time, like Fred says, the quality of the concrete is also important. Since their inception, Duracon has invested heavily in standing out in that respect. JUNE 2024
