“I wish I could say the whole thing was so planned and lined-up, but it wasn’t,” Sky says. “It was kind of random. It was ‘Oh, this piece of land is for sale, lets buy it,’ and now ‘This piece of land is for sale, lets buy that too.’ We went one project at a time and it all ended up working out.” Because Sky started the company when she was a recent MBA graduate with student debt, she financed her land purchases with limited partnerships, which proved effective. What also proved effective was their decision to do more than just hotels and resorts – though the company is not yet widely recognized for their other development efforts. “A lot of people think we’re just a hotel company, but we also build residential condos, industrial condos – all kinds of different things,” Sky explains. At the moment, however, Basecamp Resorts is mostly known as a developer and operator of hotels and resorts. And as a developer and operator of hotels and resorts, Sky believes what sets the company apart is their “exceptional customer service.” “I know probably every business says that, but we really do go above and beyond to offer a branded experience at Basecamp that’s in a ‘home away from home’ model.” Many of Basecamp Resorts’ properties are “effectively purpose-built BnB’s,” Sky explains, but what differentiates them is “they have all the amenities of a hotel.” So guests get the best of both worlds.
