Basecamp Resorts is an industry-leading provider of memorable accommodations in Western Canada’s most spectacular mountain destinations. Since forming in 2016, they have grown and evolved to operate 13 hotel and resort properties across Alberta and British Columbia, with multiple exciting properties in the pipeline. They have also evolved to operate other property typologies, including both high-end condominiums and affordable housing units. Sky McLean, the founder and CEO of Basecamp Resorts, is an entrepreneur born and raised in Ontario. Prior to creating one of the country’s fastest growing hospitality brands, she earned an MBA in real estate at the Schulich School of Business at York University. After graduation, she moved to Calgary, where she worked for a local real estate developer. At 29 years old, she bought her first property, a condominium in Canmore, which she started renting out on AirBnB on weekends. She recalls “instantly falling in love” with the business model. “I was making a lot more money than I thought I was going to make,” she says. “I realized this was a very strong market – and I realized that if I had a whole bunch of properties instead of just one, then I would have a really great business.” Soon after coming to that realization, Sky went out on her own and founded Basecamp Resorts. Soon after, the company built their first boutique hotel resort on Bow Valley Trail in Canmore, comprising 32 townhouse suites. They called that ‘Basecamp Resorts Canmore.’ While that was under construction, other hotels in the town came up for sale, and the sellers approached the company to gauge their interest. They ended up buying a motel on 8 Street in the heart of downtown Canmore, then renovated it and rebranded it to ‘Lamphouse by Basecamp.’ They also ended up buying the building next to the original Basecamp Resorts, which was previously a run-down hostel, and after a renovation became ‘Basecamp Lodge.’ From there, more opportunities presented themselves, and company continued to grow and evolve at a rapid pace.
