civiliti is a multi-award-winning urban design, landscape architecture, and placemaking studio based in Montreal, Quebec. Since 2001, the firm has concentrated its practice on projects with “high public content” – projects that demonstrate and underscore the specific identity of the place which the team calls home. Led by partners Peter Soland and Fannie Duguay-Lefebvre, civiliti has successfully delivered some highly-acclaimed public projects, and has built a solid reputation in the city for its ability to positively shape public spaces. Recent examples of civiliti’s versatile work include Place Monique-Mercure and the Saint-Laurent Biodiversity Corridor. The former is a subtle urban intervention located along the side façade of the Art Deco Outremont Theatre on Bernard Street. The latter is a unique and highly ambitious master plan for a territory of approximately 450 hectares of land, part of the borough of SaintLaurent. The plan evolved out of a desire to restore lost habitats, recreating links between natural environments while enabling residents to get acquainted with nature in a respectful way. Among other industry awards and accolades, each of these two projects won a prestigious National Urban Design Award from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC). As did civiliti’s most recent project, the transformation of the Maisonneuve Library grounds. “We appreciate that,” Peter Soland says of that recognition. “We highly value kudos from our peers because it means our work is understood and respected.” Fannie Duguay-Lefebvre agrees. “Peer recognition is important,” she says. “But nothing beats watching people sit on a bench we designed or take comfort under a tree we planted. That’s the most rewarding part of what we do. We get a JULY 2024 Murray Street, Griffintown - Photo: ©Ulysse Lemerise/OSA
