you’re working with what’s existing, a lot of the time you don’t know what you’re going to find when you open up a wall,” she adds. “We’ll do preliminary searches, we’ll do our due diligence, but there are always things that are going o come up that you can’t foresee until you’re in the field and you’re actually doing it. That’s when a lot of the decision-making happens and a lot of the learning happens.” MJD Architect is very effective at making decisions and Marie-Josée credits that to two main factors – one, their experience, and two, the close relationships they have developed with their contracting partners. “We have a really good reputation among contractors,” she says. “As a firm, I think we’re quite well-liked. We’re known for working well with contractors. Our relationships are very strong.” Because the heritage sector is so specialized, MJD Architect has worked with a lot of the same contractors on multiple projects. Some of those relationships, Marie-Josée says, have endured over two decades. One close construction partner, for example, is Raymond Martin Ltée – a Quebec-based construction company specializing in the maintenance and repair of roofs. They are a company founded back in 1959 by Raymond Martin, and they are now run by René Martin, one of Raymond’s seven children.
