The Construction Source

MJD Architect is an industry-leading heritage architecture firm based in Saint-Henri, Quebec. As led by Marie-Josée Deschênes – a professional with over 31 years’ experience in the fields of architecture, urban design, lighting, management, and characterization of built heritage – they focus primarily on restoration projects for heritage buildings where churches occupy a prominent place. On many of their projects, they work closely with Quebec’s Ministry of Culture and Communications and the Religious Heritage Council of Quebec. Marie-Josée and her team are well-recognized by those bodies for their expertise, their rigor, and their ability to successfully intervene on heritage projects while respecting and honouring the character of the original building. “What we do is such a specialized discipline,” says Marie-Josée. “We do a lot of religious heritage buildings. We’re fully immersed in that sector and we’re well known for what we do. If the client has an old building they need restored, they think of MJD Architect, because they know we have the expertise to do it.” Marie-Josée earned her master’s degree in architect in 1996, and she has been member of the order of Architects of Quebec since 2005. During her graduate studies in architecture, she explored how to approach contemporary interventions on old buildings, and she now has extensive knowledge of different restoration theories and different approaches to intervention on built heritage. Over the years, she has used that experience to collaborate and assist with the development of various training courses, studies and initiatives of regional and national organizations whose mission is the preservation of heritage. Marie-Josée’s experience is not only academic, JULY 2024
