Grand River Modular (GRM) is an Indigenousowned home construction company dedicated to transforming the way homes are built. Their mission is to rapidly produce high-quality modular housing solutions that cater to a wide range of needs and initiatives. Currently, their flagship offering is a line of fully detached backyard dwellings that comply with ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) bylaws for most of Ontario. Moving forward, they want to produce similar solutions for other markets across the country, in order to make housing more sustainable, affordable, and accessible to all. Their vision is nothing less than “revolutionizing the housing industry.” “For the larger players in town we want to be disruptive and force them to change,” says Gene Meredith, co-founder of Grand River Modular with his partner Kayla Meredith. “We can build high quality homes twice as quickly as most of the current builders can. We can build them more cost-effectively. We want to leave them no choice but to do better or get left behind.” When Grand River Modular began, the company’s concept was about doing the right thing and hoping it has a ripple effect in the industry. “I grew up in New Zealand with a single mother moving from rental to rental from birth to age 18 and I don’t want that to happen to other kids,” says Gene. “The same can be said for every leadership member in the company. They are experts in our industry that hold motivation from rough upbringings and the will to change that for future generations.” When the Merediths were looking for their first home to start their family, they found that all they could afford for a first home was deemed “unliveable.” JULY 2024
