Moving forward, Johnston Builders will continue to pursue a diverse array of work, but their plan is to be very selective about the clients they work for. They made that decision before Don retired, when they took advantage of a government grant to bring on some consultants, who helped define “who we are as a company,” James says. “We already had a ‘mission/values’ section in our operation manual, but this was an opportunity where we could learn a lot about ourselves and how to execute our strategy,” he recalls. “We hired Results Canada to work with our leadership for a year. We learned so much about ourselves. The boom/bust cycle was happening more frequently. To have the growth we wanted, we needed to up our game and focus on what the real opportunities were.” “We re-established our whole purpose as an organization – our core values. We learned a lot about ourselves and who our perfect client was.
