Over time, new methods came with new challenges but their team was well prepared and their experience allowed for many successful project completions. 2017 marked a year of change for Johnston Builders. The retirement of their founder, Don Johnston, brought about changes to the company. James Hackney took on the role of President and CEO, and they undertook some of the largest projects in their history, brought in a number of new team members and changed their look. After 27 years, Johnston Builders re-branded. With fresh leadership and a new logo, 2017 began great strides towards the future. Prior to joining Johnston Builders, James attended the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, and his post-graduate dream was to be an architect. He started looking at construction engineering while still in school. Upon finishing an architectural tech course for design/build, he was presented with a few opportunities, including one opportunity in the energy sector in Alberta, and another especially lucrative opportunity in the United States. “I had an opportunity where I would be working in Houston, Texas within 10 years, or I could go to this smaller Johnston Builders company and make half as much annually,” says James. “I chose Johnston Builders because I saw so much upside in Don Johnston and I aligned well with him.” After a few years James had a share offering and started buying into the company, which consisted of an office staff of five at the time.
