The Construction Source

Johnston Builders Ltd. (JBL) is a privately owned contracting firm based in St. Albert, Alberta and Whitehorse, Yukon. They started small and through steady controlled growth have become a contractor that can handle even the most complex projects. With a current staff of 45 professionals, the firm has successfully completed a wide array of construction projects in the public and private sectors across Western Canada. They believe their longevity and success is powered by their collective approach – by working closely with all project stakeholders, from owners and consultants to subtrades and suppliers, they ensure they deliver the best possible result every time. “Our brand promise is collective team work, positive results,” says James Hackney, the company’s President and CEO. “We firmly believe and live by this promise. We want our employees to be excited to come to work every day and work as a team. We want to set them up so they are proud of the job they do, and so they go the extra mile to provide a positive result – which ultimately results in repeat work.” This approach has proven effective, as 90 per cent of the company’s business now comes from repeat clients Don Johnston founded Johnston Builders in 1990 in the basement of his St. Albert home with the vision of providing exceptional service to clients in any market. He implemented a strategy of bidding on the jobs that other contractors didn’t want to pursue. This led to the company successfully proving themselves on many challenging projects in Northern Alberta and in remote, rural communities. The 100th project by Johnston Builders was completed in 1999. Over the first nine years they went from completing primarily small, lowrise new builds, renovations and additions to JULY 2024
