“I know it’s kind of clichéd to say that we’re a big family, but that’s what it feels like. We have team building exercises where we’ll do paintballing, or bowling, or have a barbecue. And if it’s a big day – like maybe we have a big concrete pour – the project manager will bring out cupcakes or pizzas.” “We also constantly check in,” she continues. “We have our monthly safety meetings in the office where we do a round table with everybody. We ask them ‘What are we doing well? What do we need to work on? Is there anything you’ve noticed on site?’ We give everyone a voice.” “We try to make sure this is a healthy place to work,” Justin says. “We want to see our employees do well. We want to see them prosper and find opportunities in life. We try to foster a real family environment, because we know we’re nothing without our team. Our team is what makes us successful and we want them to be successful too. We also want them to feel like they’re being heard and supported.” As a result of that family values approach, JMS Construction has had a lot of success retaining their key team members. According to Nichole, some employees have been with the company long enough to retire with them. As for subcontractors and suppliers, JMS Construction has formed relationships that are just as strong and long-lasting. Some of those relationships Justin formed when he was just an apprentice. Mostly, those relationships are with local companies – “because we’re a local company,” Nichole says, “and we want to support other local companies.” THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE CANADA
