AUGUST 2024 General Concrete also enjoys close-knit relationships with their suppliers and vendors. Many of those partners they have been working with for over 30 years. For the locallybased ones, they often help them out at their yards – they dig out and clean their ponds, they maintain water ponds, they provide general maintenance, et cetera. Nate believes working together like that has helped deepen their bonds. Currently, in partnership with those longstanding suppliers, General Concrete is in the midst of a period of growth. According to Nate, one driver of that growth is they recently started working with a Kelowna-based company that does a lot of renovations and new builds of gas stations. General Concrete is already on their third gas station with that company. With another client, they also recently started their first hydrogen plant build, which will be one of their largest projects to date. With the government, they are currently involved in several schools and daycares. That’s on top of all the company’s regular consistent work on residential driveways. “We’re doing what we want to be doing,” Nate says. “We’re doing residential, we’re doing commercial, we’re doing some really specialized work like gas stations and schools. We’re where we want to be. In the future, we’d like to focus a little bit more on commercial, as those jobs are a little bit longer than a typical residential job, and I think we’re on our way. The last few years we’ve successfully gotten our foot in the door, which has been great.” Lastly, over the next few years, Nate would like the company to grow in size – perhaps even as much as double in size. Ideally, they would like to employ a team of between 20 and 25 people. The challenge, Nate admits, is simply finding the right people, and he says they won’t grow unless they can. No matter how big the company gets, they want their team to be industry-leading experts, and they want everyone they employ to take pride in the work they do.
