General Concrete is a full-service concrete company based in British Columbia’s Lower Mainland. For owners and fatherson-team Dan and Nate Veldhoen, no job is too big or too small, too simple or too challenging – between them and their tight-knit team, they can deliver the “perfect solution and pour.” “The first thing you need to know about General Concrete is that our team knows concrete,” Nate says. “More than this, our team loves concrete. As a family-run business with several decades of combined experience in concrete, you could almost say it runs in our veins. No matter the project, we take great pride in our work and a job exceptionally done.” Dan first started the company in 1989. Nate has been involved since he was 15 years old – when he started, it was a summer job, and then he worked there during his breaks from university. About 10 years ago, he returned to the business full time and essentially took over, with a vision of both growing it and modernizing it in terms of efficiency and environmental sustainability. These days, minimizing waste and recycling are important emphasises of the company. “We’re trying to reuse the driveways we take out as much as we can,” Nate explains. “We’re trying to use volumetric mixers more than normal mixers to make sure we’re using the proper amount instead of sending waste back. We want to be as environmentally friendly as possible.” In Nate’s time with General Concrete, the company has also evolved considerably in terms of their capabilities. Initially, they strictly focused on placing and finishing. Today, they are full-service AUGUST 2024
