homebuilder. “It’s the simple things, like putting stop plates over pipes before the drywall is installed so if somebody drives a screw into the wall in the wrong place, it won’t hit a water pipe as the leak might not show up for another six months,” says Thomas. Such an incident could be a liability and an inconvenience for everybody from the homeowner to the insurance company. Fairbrother Construction is staying ahead of the game in BC and Vancouver in particular when it comes to municipal regulations. “The standards for new homes in the next 10 years will be very high and hard to meet due to tightening of these directives,” says Thomas. “We’re trying to get ahead of that before those mandates are required.” A big part of assuring this attention to detail is followed through, Thomas adds, is choosing trusted subcontractors. Fairbrother Construction’s core team consists of the three partners and a bookkeeper, and the rest of the team is a full spectrum of sub-contractors. “We have excellent trades we’ve used multiple times. We can work with them and they care about the work they do, this is key,” says Thomas. The company does try new people, which sometimes turn into good relationships. “We look for tradespersons who care, do good quality work and know what they’re doing,” says Thomas. “We’re OK with people trying and accepting guidance from us. We can teach and guide, as long as the person is willing to try to do a good job.” AUGUST 2024
