In March 2015, Columbus merged with Cable & Wireless Communications PLC in a transaction that valued Cormorant at over CDN $4.4 billion. Following some further acquisitions, the group became one of the largest Ontariobased contractors in the power transmission and distribution industry. Powered by those acquisitions, the company is also poised to continue growing beyond Ontario. “The future synergies will allow us to become a significant player across Canada and North America,” says Damian Kulasingham, the company’s president and CEO. Damian joined Cormorant in 2018. He spent the last 30 years in the construction infrastructure space. He diversified his career, going from power systems to building large-scale power projects, infrastructure projects, bridges, roads, and highways, then moved to General Electric and managed joint ventures with GE and SNC Lavalin all over the world. He says he got tired of the travel and wanted to stay close to home and saw the opportunity to take a position to build an organization in Ontario. “The province was going through a transformation at the time from a power infrastructure perspective and Cormorant was the right company for me.” Damian led the integration of various subsidiaries, and now six years later Cormorant is the only fullyintegrated high voltage power solutions company in their sector. “This is a proud accomplishment of the team that we had and we currently have.” Originally from Yellowknife NWT and a member AUGUST 2024
