Quality Millwright & Machine Services (QMMS) is a locally owned full-service millwright business located in Edmonton. With more than 35 years of experience, the company has made its mark as a reputable and highly competent provider of industrial services within a variety of sectors. Munsoor Mirza purchased the company in 2015, taking a somewhat unconventional path to becoming its president and CEO. He wasn’t stepping in to lead a family business or setting up shop in his trade. While he admits to being “a pretty handy guy with a mechanical aptitude” his ability to lead and grow his business is derived from his combined academic training and business experience not typical for the industry. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree specializing in micro-biology and has his Master’s Degree in Economics focusing on healthcare systems. He worked in his field for many years in roles that included project management, business analysis, systems implementation and financial management. He has lots of experience with business process design, organizational management, and consulting. “I’ve always been entrepreneurial,” he says. “Starting back in high school, I had a small silkscreening operation with a buddy in my parents’ basement. We made custom t-shirts and patches. We even made a line of shirts for graduation that had individual caricatures of the entire graduating class. In the summers, between semesters at university, I’d buy a truck, hire a few guys and we’d spend long days laying sod, planting trees, and building decks. Even after starting my professional career and having a fulltime job with the federal government I was building houses on the side. Owning and operating a business has always been part of my core.
