of Vancouver. One of their upcoming projects includes a 25,000 sq. ft. family home. Coming from a non-painter background, Melissa took on a new approach towards leading the business. She says the most significant change she’s brought to the company has been a focus on implementing new technology and using data to inform their business practices. “My dad is very hands-on, able to quote a project just by walking it,” Melissa says. “He was not as into technology, as it simply wasn’t required by the industry.” In recent years, however, projects have begun to require bidding prior to construction starting, which made it necessary to introduce a new data-driven estimating procedure. Melissa has overseen that implementation, while Colin is still around to offer his old-school expertise. According to Melissa, “this is what makes us such a great team.” She implemented new processes where they took the information from the daily site logs that were completed for billing purposes, imported the data into Excel and then tracked that against a square footage takeoff to start to build a base of what their cost per square foot was. “There’s a lot more confidence in our estimating ability far out, which keeps builders pretty happy,” says Melissa. Melissa and her team have seamlessly integrated new technologies and data-driven business strategies with their business’ extensive history and skill with the home painting craft.
