D&L was originally founded in 1978 by David and Alex’s father and uncle, and was incorporated several years later in 1982. David and Alex, for their part, have been working in the family business almost all their lives – “ever since we’ve able to lift a shovel, we’ve been in the shop and around the atmosphere,” David says. Alex personally joined the company full time in the 1990s, starting with working as a delivery driver and labourers before slowly working his way up into more senior roles. By 2010, his father was ready to step away from the business. Alex didn’t want to run it by himself, however, so he asked David – then a heavy duty mechanic with a successful business of his own – to return and help lead D&L into the future. In the years since, D&L has grown and evolved significantly and at a steady, particularly in terms of innovation. Most notably, they established a close partnership with Waterloo Biofilter Systems – which is Canadian-owned and operated company that develops, designs, manufactures and maintains advanced onsite wastewater treatment systems. D&L now houses their components within their fiberglass tanks, and the resulting products have been very positive received in markets all over Canada. The success of those products is actually what spurred the company to open up a manufacturing facility in Saskatchewan, which now serves Western Canada, while their manufacturing facility in Manitoba serves the eastern provinces. Today, D&L contributes to a wide variety of projects – they work with residential installers, with clients in the mining and gas sector, in the public sector, and they have done a lot of work recently in remote locations. According to Alex, the majority of those clients like working with D&L for the same reasons. One of the main reasons, APRIL 2024
