Kevin credits their quality to them also: “Our team takes a lot of pride in their work,” he says. “They live it, they breathe it. They pay attention. They take the extra bit of time to get it right. Their goal isn’t just to get it done and get out – their goal is to deliver a product that’s going to last.” In order to build a team with that dedication, Verhoef Electric has focused on recruiting for values rather than experience: “We don’t hire a lot of journeymen,” Kevin explains. “Usually, we hire apprentices and train them up. We show them the quality we expect and we teach them how to deliver it. We bring them up in our culture. That’s how we’ve grown over the years.” That approach to growth has served Verhoef Electric well, and has translated to employee retention. According to Kevin, they have a couple employees who have been there as long as 17 years, a couple more who have been there 15 years, and at least 15 guys who have been there 10 years or close to it. He partly credits that loyalty to just how much the company values them: “We have a genuine understanding that we can’t do this without them,” he says. “They are important to us.
