says he wants to keep doing challenging renovations and additions, as that’s always been a passion of his and he doesn’t see that passion fading – but at the same time, he’s also interested in expanding his horizons beyond just renovations and additions. Ultimately, he says his goal is to break into the new custom home market and to build some custom home acreages. “I want to have two divisions in the company,” he explains. “I love the renovation side because you get to see the stark change. You get to see the before and after. You get to see the 1960s kitchen, and then six weeks later it’s a clean, polished contemporary kitchen and there’s no hint of the old kitchen there. That’s amazing. That’s a lot of fun for me.” “At the same time, I also love to look at an open field, and then eight-months-to-a-year later see there’s a house there,” he adds. “That’s also very rewarding. So I want to do both. I want to have two divisions. I believe that’s where we’re headed.” The challenge to that expansion, Cam concedes, is that he’s not sure how big a company he wants to run. He used to manage a larger contracting business where he had more employees under him and he did more work, but that role required him to be less handson. “It got me away from what I love to do,” he says. “I don’t want to be just a boss that drives around and checks on other people’s work. I want to do the work. So it’s tough. It’s a challenge. I have the workload and I could very easily hire people and grow, but I have to ask myself what I want out of the business and what kind of balance I want to strike. That’s what I’m figuring out now.” “Whatever happens, I know for sure that I’m never going to let the quality slip,” Cam concludes. “I’ll never grow to the point that the quality is compromised. I care too much about what I do to ever let that happen.” JULY 2023
