specialized in fixing electrical problems in signs. One day, their clients asked them if they could also build the electrical signs they fixed, and PM Signs was born. Cody Mathiesen, the grandson of Poul and Solveig, grew up around the family business – both family businesses, actually, as the family also operates PM Electric, which provides electrical contracting services throughout Alberta. Cody began his career in graphic design, so he gravitated towards the sign business. He started working with PM Signs roughly 15 years ago. In the early days, PM Signs worked mainly with petroleum companies, their projects consisted of mainly florescent and old halogen lit signage. In Cody’s time with the company, however, that sector started slowing down, and the company had to diversify their clientele. They started talking more to marketing companies, contractors, landscapers, property developers, and municipalities. In recent years, the municipality sector has been particularly active – some of the company’s recent clients include the Town of Okotoks, the Town of Sylvan Lake, the City of Red Deer, the Town of Stony Plain, and Saddle Hills County. “We’ve worked with a lot of different towns, doing their entrance signs, helping them with their wayfinding, et cetera,” Cody explains. “We work with them to help them develop their vision for their signage.” According to Jim Kosh, those larger clients tend to choose PM Signs because of the completeness of their service offering: JULY 2023
