do.” According to Greg, the main reason Schouten is so adept at those large-scale and complex projects is the skill of their workforce. He says they have “highly-skilled operators who know what they are doing.” He also says they provide those operators “with the tools and equipment that they need to be successful” – that includes specialized excavators, the kind that are “few and far between in Ontario.” Moving forward, Greg says Schouten’s goal is to continue leveraging the skill of their team and the strength of their fleet in order to deliver even larger-scale and even more technically-complex projects across Ontario. (For example, they haven’t yet demolished a bridge over a highway – but the next time a project like that is available, they hope to get a shot at it.) And as they grow their projects, they also hope to continue growing the company: “We definitely intend to continue growing,” Greg says. “We want to continue growing in sales. We also want to explore some other markets that might help us become more efficient in what we do. We’re always looking for ways to improve. That might mean self-performing more of our work instead of subcontracting it out. That’s something we’re always willing to look at. “ “At the same time, we don’t want to spread ourselves too thin,” he concludes. “We only want to do something if we can be really good at it. Our reputation is too important to us to risk doing something badly. Our reputation is why our clients choose us. We never want to do anything to risk compromising that.” DECEMBER 2023
