Redefining the industry Looking forward, Griffin and Josh have a fairly ambitious vision for Shift Accessibility Contractors, involving not just their company, but the industry as a whole. They want to do their part to “redefine” that industry, Griffin says – and they want to redefine it as an industry that makes accessibility a priority. “There are a lot of homes that are being built now that are just getting skinnier and skinnier and taller and taller. There’s no real accommodation given to any form of accessibility. We want to see more of that accommodation. We want to push for the design and construction of homes that are set up to provide equal opportunity to people of all abilities.” “Even just building houses with zero-threshold showers would be a good start,” he says. “Then hopefully we’ll see wider hallways, maybe stacked closets on floors for future elevator installations. Those sorts of things aren’t huge additional costs, but they make a real difference.” AUGUST 2023
