There are also shopping centres and plazas in the area, as well as restaurants and cafes, making the intersection “the perfect setting for a growing company.” “There’s a lot of businesses over there, there’s a lot of things to do over there,” Abubakar says. “The area has quite a lot of economic activity going on.” Also, it’s in Markham, a city that has a lot of appeal – to DiGreen Homes especially. “We like Markham,” Abubakar says. “We started off in Markham. We always have something in Markham. Over the last 20 years, I don’t think there’s been a year when we didn’t have anything going in Markham. It’s a great city with a lot of opportunities.” “So this project is dear to me personally,” he adds. “It’s taking up a lot of my personal time. It’s a different asset class than we’re used to, and I want to make sure we get it right.” It’s also important to get it right, he says, because the building will be DiGreen Homes’ future home. In fact, one of the inspirations for the project was that they wanted to create a new headquarters. When they got to thinking about what they wanted from their own space, they naturally started thinking about what other companies would want – and the idea for DiGreen Square was conceived. “We called it DiGreen Square because we wanted to put our money where our mouth is,” Abubakar explains. “We’re not going to put our name on something that we’re not proud of.
