education. He originally started Design Works Engineering in Grande Prairie, before making the move to nearby Edmonton in 2017. Since then, he’s been very involved in the local business community – particularly in the Edmonton of Chamber Commerce, where he currently serves as Vice Chair of the 2022 Board of Directors. In creating Design Works Engineering, Haydar’s goal from the start was “to create a onestop design and engineering firm that was focused heavily on service.” “I always tell my staff that we’re not in the engineering business. We’re in the service business. Engineering is what we do, but service is what makes us stand apart.” As for the kind of projects he wanted to do, Haydar says the goal was also clear from the beginning – he wanted to be diverse. “I wanted to do high-rises, lowrises, residential, commercial, industrial, and everything else – I wanted to do it all,” he recalls. “When we first started in Grand Prairie, there was a lot of industrial going on, so that was our bread and butter. I always wanted to take the business to a larger scale, however, and I knew if I wanted to do bigger projects I wouldn’t be able to do them there. I had to expand. So that’s what we did. We expanded to Edmonton and we started doing high-rises. It worked out really well.” These days, Design Works is living up to Haydar’s initial vision. They are doing projects of all sizes and scopes spanning virtually all sectors. They do small tenant improvements all the way to high-rise towers. OCTOBER 2022
