heatingandhoardingstructures. Despite the challenges, the project is currently ongoing and on schedule and due for completion later this year. According to Ben, M.D. Steele is particularly proud of that project due to its scale. It has been a number of years since there has been any work on the floodway approaching that scale, and M.D. Steele is proud to have been the company entrusted with it. “I don’t think it’s a stretch to claim that is probably one of Manitoba’s finest pieces of infrastructure,” he says. “It provides flood protection to hundreds of thousands of people in our capital city. For a company of our size, to be able to deliver that project, that’s pretty special. Sometimes I go on site and have a look of it and just marvel at how much we’ve been able to accomplish. Given the size of our company, I think that’s truly impressive.” Ben is also proud to know the impact the project will have. PTH 59 is one of the Winnipeg area’s busiest highways. Millions of people will drive over it. Ben says “that’s something I’m going to be proud of.” Meanwhile, the St. Andrews Lock and Dam – valued at roughly $37 million, and scheduled for completion in 2023 – is also an important piece of infrastructure, and it also presented an array of challenges. Many of those challenges have related to the historic nature of the existing structure – which is one of only two of its kind in the world, and the only one still functioning. Classified as a heritage site, the main dam at St. Andrews is a ‘Camere’ style structure THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE CANADA
