At the 2020 Canadian Urban Institute Brownie Awards, for example, it won Best Small Project; at the 2020 New Yorkbased Interior Design Magazine Best of Year Awards, it was a Best of Year Honoree; at the 2021 International Design Awards, it won an Honorable Mention (along with two other Dubbeldam projects); and it won an Honorable Mention in the 2021 Architecture MasterPrize awards. In 2020, the project was recognized with a Canadian Green Building Award – which Dubbeldam particularly values, as that accolade recognizes their commitment to sustainability and energy performance. The Bata Shoe Factory renovation is an ambitious adaptive re-use project located at the gateway to the small town of Batawa, Ontario. There, the project team took a factory originally built in 1939 and converted it into a modern mixed-use residential, commercial, and community building with a light environmental footprint and a social mandate. The converted building includes mixed-income rental accommodation, a café, a daycare, and a community art space. There is also space reserved for educational facilities. The Canadian Green Building Awards jury, in their comments, called the finished project “exemplary” for a number of reasons – including “its respectful adaptation of an important part of Ontario’s APRIL 2022
