The Construction Source

SOTIRIOS CORP Photo: James Brittain a kid, Sotirios “grew up” in the company, working on-site every summer as a teenager. As an adult, he has managed and supervising specialized masonry construction projects all over Manitoba. In his time, he has been a part of some high profile projects – including the masonry construction at the Wuskwatim Hydroelectric dam in the north, as well as the restoration of Lower Fort Garry, which was a National Heritage site originally built in 1812. After returning from Puerto Rico, Sotirios resumed his work with Alpha Masonry, while at the same time starting his own company, called ‘Sotirios Corp.’ Under that self-titled banner, he has worked on an array of interesting projects for creative clients based all over the world. Some of the highlights include: a renovation of an existing building on an 84 acre property in Ojai, California, for Kyle DeWoody; a contemporary house in a heritage area in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, for painter Katherine Bernhardt; and a new house on the Snake River in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, for artist Max Snow. Sotirios’ biggest project to date, however, is Sherbrook Flats, a new six-storey, 71-unit rental building on the east side of Sherbrook Street between Broadway and Portage Avenue. Sotirios designed the project in partnership with Cibinel Architecture, who was the local architect of record. According to Sotirios, the project represents his vision for sustainability in the city: “I’m a big supporter of our downtown,” he says. “I feel like downtown is definitely the future. I wanted to invest in it – and I wanted to invest in a vision of a healthy, dense urban core.” “I detest suburban sprawl,” he adds. “I see it as a weakening of our city and our economic and social wellbeing. I see that as regressive development. I really wanted to add density to the site.” Sherbook Flats is owned by the Kotoulas familyandmanagedby Akman Property Management.
