agile,” he continues. “You’re better able to solve problems and come up with solutions just because of those relationships.” “The IPD model is a paradigm shift,” he says. “When you have lump-sum models, you have a model that’s inherently built for conflict. In those cases, when a problem comes up, instead of focusing on the problem and solving it, you spend a lot of time and energy figuring out ‘Okay, whose problem is this?’ In the IPD world, that gets cut out. You’re just focusing on the solution.” The project management team (PMT) – which includes the Town of Drayton Valley, Group2, Chandos, WSP and Priority Mechanical meets biweekly to “discuss any big issues” and to “make any big decisions that affect the team as a whole,” Dan says. They also conduct ad-hoc meetings as needed throughout the week. As a result of that close collaboration, Dan explains that the project is due to be completed well ahead of schedule. The project was originally projected to be completed by the end of October, but the current iteration of the schedule has them finishing by early September 2022. “We’re about two months ahead of schedule right now on the overall,” Dan says. “So the process has been very successful.” As Troy Smith points out, being ahead of schedule is a particularly impressive accomplishment when you look at when the project commenced – just before the onset of COVID.
