The plan for that first model home, called ‘The Trillium,’ proved to be hugely popular. That was a two-storey home with a “really unique layout,” Paul says, including single storey “wings” that were used for the kitchen and master suite, respectively. The core two-storey section of the home houses living spaces and a powder room on the main level and three bedrooms and a bathroom on the upper level. EkoBuilt sold that first model home in 2020. In 2021, they introduced a new model, based in in Dunrobin in West Ottawa. The new home is a 1,634 square foot bungalow with four bedrooms and one bathroom. A separate two-car garage with a space on the upper level adds flexibility to property. EkoBuilt uses the upper space as office, but other homeowners can use it as an “in-law suite, rental apartment, home gym, or studio,” Paul says. The new model is smaller than the first one, which Paul says was very purposeful. Again, he says it’s all about providing affordability. “In general, the cost of construction is becoming a lot higher than it used to be,” he explains. “No matter what kind of house you’re building – whether you’re building a code house or a passive house or anything in between – the prices are going up. A big reason for that is the cost of the land. The cost of land has doubled or tripled in the past three or four years alone.” “So what we’re finding is that most peoples’ budgets are decreasing,” he continues. “The same goes for the size THE CONSTRUCTION SOURCE CANADA
