The Construction Source

FEBRUARY 2021 Looking forward In recent years, Springfield Woodworking has completed a run of very large projects, including a number of Winnipeg apartment blocks with more than 180 units each. For a while now, Pauly says they have had four-to-six such projects on the go at any one time. He expects that to continue. “Sometimes it seems like we’re the only cabinetmaking company in Manitoba, from the amount of calls we’re getting,” he says. Pauly and his teamwelcome the work, however, and they have no plans on slowing down. On occasion, Pauly says that it feels like the company is approaching maximum capacity, but his motto is “There’s always room for one more.” “If we have to do double shifts on a machine, or shifts-and- a-half, then that’s what we’ll do,” he says. “We don’t ever want to let a client down. We want to take advantage of the opportunities we have.” At the same time, Pauly is also conscious of the importance of his people. He would like to keep growing, but he knows that will only be possible if the right talent is in place. “We just finished expanding last year, and we have lots more room for expansion, but we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves,” he says. “You can have the best buildings, the best machines, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t have the best people. It all depends on how many quality people we can find out there.” And if the company does grow, Pauly says they will never leave their smallest clients behind. He says it shouldn’t matter if the contract is worth $1,000 or $1 million. He believes the client should receive the same level of service and quality. “We’ve always believed that small clients are as important as big clients,” he says. “Whatever happens, we’re going to keep believing that.”
