The Construction Source

FEBRUARY 2021 that kind of environmentally- friendly work will remain a priority. “We want to focus on our clientele, and to continue to focus on sustainability. My son has recently joined the team. We are part of Passive House Canada, and we want to create net zero buildings and homes in the future. That is something we are working towards.” Handy’s commitment to ‘family’ is entrenched in their designs, as they design for the future of the environment and the future of civilization. On their homepage, the firm has a quote from Kenneth Clark which states, “I think one can tell more about a civilization from its architecture than from anything else it leaves behind – painting and literature depend largely on unpredictable individuals. But architecture is to some extent a communal art – at least it depends on a relationship between the user and the maker much closer than in the other arts.” Ted Handy and Associates want their architecture to reflect a civilization that offers a kind of balance. Their designs indicate an appreciation for the place in which our homes are situated— within the environment. They also want to express their admiration for what makes us human—history, art, and culture. Their designs tell us about a civilization that understands the beauty of nature and the beauty of what makes us human. It is this appreciation for the natural and the human that allows Handy and his associates to craft sustainable buildings that both meet the client’s needs while retaining a dedication to sustainability.
