FEBRUARY 2021 administrative buildings. Their renovative and restorative work on the Gibson Cultural Centre, which received the 2004 Wood Design Award, shows their dedication to history and culture. The beautiful woodwork inside the building was both preserved and highlighted, along with new windows and a restored exterior. The firm also served as key consultants for a number of long-term care homes. Royal Rose Place is just one of the long-term care facilities they helped to design. The design itself accounted for a demand to build a facility that can house 96 beds and a retirement lodge with 102 units. The project started its first phase in 2013, and Handy and his team are still contributing to it today with the addition of 64 much needed beds. Even with such a variety of projects, Ted Handy and Associates is always thinking about sustainability in design. They want to create environmentally friendly buildings that are durable and lasting. They also want the designs to be multi-functional. In this way, their buildings will never go to waste and can always be adapted to function. Handy says that diversity of work has always been his goal. When he started his own firm, he says “the vision was to do quality work, recognizing that there are going to be a variety of client types.” From the start, Handy Photography by Scott Norsworthy
