FEBRUARY 2021 year later, the firm moved to Barrie and merged with H. W. H. Nesbitt, which history traces back to 1958 with the creation of Nesbitt Davis Architects. It was in 1990, following the retirement of Nesbitt, that Ted Handy took over as the lead at Ted Handy and Associates Inc., Architect. The team at Ted Handy and Associates comprises roughly a dozen members – that’s the number Handy prefers, and what he believes is the most efficient – enough to take on any project while still allowing for the high level of collaboration and partnering that Handy believes makes a project successful. Because they have such a focused and dedicated team, Ted Handy and Associates is able to keep the client constantly up to date with the evolution of their project’s design. They extend the same commitment to communication and clarity to builders and the trades, or basically any individual who is engaged with a client’s project. The firm believes clear communication and active listening help build partnerships and collaborative relationships – and those relationships often become longstanding. “Our philosophy has always been to maintain a stable clientele, so we can focus on providing the best possible service to those clients,’ says Handy. The County of Simcoe is just one of the clients Ted Handy and Associates is dedicated to serving. For example, the firm won the 2013 Canadian Green Building Award, and the 2014 OAA Award for Design Excellence, for their expansion of the County of Simcoe Administrative Center, developed in association with Teeple Architects. Their work is also reflected in the Simcoe County Education Centre, which is surrounded by beautiful woods, viewable inside through the glass walls.
