The Construction Source

Tyler, meanwhile, also started working in construction at a young age, helping out his father in summers and on weekends. However, he studied business and marketing in school, and after graduating he spent several years travelling North America working with marketing agencies. He enjoyed his time in that field and he believes he learned a lot, but ultimately living out of a suitcase grew old, and his passion for building and construction always persisted. “I wasn’t getting the fulfillment I used to get from working with my hands on site,” he recalls. “There was something very satisfying about seeing the transformation of an empty lot, with nothing but grass and dirt, into a phenomenal finished home.” Roughly eight years ago, Tyler returned home and joined the family business. Like Martin before him, he started as a labourer and has risen through the ranks. He’s now a project manager and part owner of Sonnarc Homes. Historically, Sonnarc Homes has delivered a variety of work, including custom homes, home renovations, and commercial project. When Tyler officially joined, they were taking advantage of a boom in the Kitchener-Waterloo region, and doing a lot of large scale custom homes and renovations for incoming residents. These days, that remains their primary niche, and their projects can vary in size and value. When it comes to their new builds, for example, they cater to a variety of spaces, from modest but well-finished bungalows, to sprawling 18,000 square foot estate homes, with extensive home automation, and mechanical systems. “We can go as big as the customer wants,” Tyler says. “There’s really no job too big or too small – it’s more about whether it’s the right fit and the right customer.” The right customer, he explains, is someone who values quality AUGUST 2021
