They have developed an in-wall air purifier unit that South Park is considering for future projects, and Eric has been very impressed by both the functionality and the slick aesthetic. Large developers are starting to install these units in their high-rises, and South Park expects to do the same in their custom homes. Staying modern also means being on the cutting edge of energy-efficiency. To that end, the company recently received a certification from Passive House Institute (training by Passive House Canada). They have also started work on several passive- inspired homes, with the goal to get all the way to net-zero in the near future. South Park’s vision is in line with the vision of the City of Toronto. In October, 2019, City Council voted unanimously to declare a climate emergency and accelerate efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change, adopting a stronger emissions reduction target of net zeroby2050or sooner. Toronto’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets are now 30 per cent by 2020, 65 per cent by 2030, and net zero by 2050 or sooner. “Toronto has a goal,” Eric says. “We want to be on the leading edge of that.” “High performance buildings are the future,” Matt agrees, “and I think we’re headed in the right direction.” Lastly, Eric and Matt say they want to grow the company, but at a careful and controlled pace. Both want to remain hands-on with every build, and neither are willing to compromise on their quality. “There’s room to grow, but I don’t think we’re going to triple or quadruple in size,” Eric concludes. “Quality has to come first. We’ll only grow if we can find the right partners to grow with.”
